Lighting Idea - Taio Cruz / Dirty Picture

When researching editing techniques based around the lighting and different transitions, I discovered the idea of spotlights and having one main light to highlight the artist and make them the main feature of the music video.

The music video for Dirty Picture by Taio Cruz ft Ke$ha has a story line based around taking photos in a night club. There are white flashes in the video to represent the photos being taken on the cameras. Even though, it not a white flash transition, it is still a flash produced from the camera. This could be relevant if we decided to incorporate photos as props in our music video, also if various flashed are edited together, so that there is a bundle of them, it will seem like a flash when it played back at normal speed.

When cutting between frames, there is a white flash that appears as they progress from a close up to an establishing shot. This transition is use to be able to change shots and location. In this case, they use the transition flash as if it was the sunlight shinning into the camera lens which would cause the screen to go white. We essentially are using the same effect but using the flash as a flashback as the concept.

A main transition that I found interesting, in which I could use for my music video when filming the dark scenes in the clubs, is the spotlight lighting they have on the main features in the music video. The use a spotlight to only shine a bright light on the main character who is usually central shot. This is a good effect to highlight the main aspects that they want the audience to see.
